Frequently Asked Questions

Your Legal Questions Answered

Find answers to common questions about our legal services in Cancún and Quintana Roo.

We offer a free 30-minute initial consultation, either in person at our offices on Av. Bonampak or via video call. During this consultation, we evaluate your case, explain your legal options, and provide a cost and timeline estimate. You can schedule your consultation by calling +52 (998) 100-7184 or through our contact form.

Fees vary depending on the complexity of the case and the area of law. Generally, we work with flat fees (fixed amount agreed upon at the start), hourly rates for specific consultations, and in some cases contingency fee arrangements where payment depends on the outcome. During the free consultation, we provide a detailed no-obligation quote.

We have over 40 years of experience in criminal law (criminal defense, injunctions, federal crimes), family law (divorce, custody, child support), civil law (contracts, real estate, leases), commercial law (corporations, commercial contracts), labor law (wrongful termination, severance), constitutional protection (amparo), immigration law (visas, residency permits), and notarial law (deeds, wills, powers of attorney).

Timelines vary by process type. An uncontested divorce can be resolved in 2-4 months. A standard civil lawsuit may take 6 months to 2 years. Criminal proceedings under the accusatory system can last 3 months to 2 years depending on the stage. An indirect amparo proceeding is generally resolved in 3-6 months. During your consultation, we will provide a specific estimate for your case.

For the first consultation, we recommend bringing: valid government-issued ID (INE or passport), any documents related to your case (contracts, lawsuits, certificates, rulings), recent proof of address, and a written summary of the relevant facts. If you do not have all documents, we can begin the consultation and request the missing ones later.

The amparo is Mexico's most important constitutional protection mechanism. It is used when a government authority violates your fundamental rights. There are two types: indirect amparo (against laws, acts of authority, and omissions) and direct amparo (against final court judgments). It is an essential remedy that allows the suspension of government actions while the case is resolved.

In Quintana Roo there are two main paths: voluntary divorce (mutual consent), which is faster and more affordable when both parties agree on the terms of separation, and no-fault divorce, where only one spouse's wish to divorce is needed without stating a cause. In both cases, issues of alimony, child custody, property division, and use of the marital home are resolved.

If arrested, you have the right to remain silent, to a defense attorney from the moment of detention, to be informed of the reason for your arrest, and to a phone call. Do not sign any documents without your attorney present. Contact us immediately at +52 (998) 100-7184 for urgent assistance. Mexico's accusatory criminal justice system guarantees the presumption of innocence and the right to adequate defense.

Mexico offers various immigration options: visitor visa (up to 180 days), temporary residency (1-4 years, ideal for retirees and remote workers), and permanent residency (indefinite, through family ties, retirement with provable income, or after 4 years of temporary residency). We also handle naturalizations and immigration status regularization for foreigners in irregular situations.

Yes, we provide fully bilingual services in Spanish and English. This is especially helpful for the expat community and tourists in Cancún and the Riviera Maya who need legal assistance. We can handle your case, review documents, and represent you before authorities in both languages.
